New beginnings: Algarve and summer trails
Back after some months of absence, I'm exploring Portugal and discovering some perfect trails for this summer.
Hi there, fellow nomad!
After one year of Nomad Listings, I decided to take a short break to better understand what's next. So here I am, back after some weeks off, with fresh content that I hope you'll enjoy.
I started this year in the Algarve, where I spent five months rediscovering this part of Portugal. I will share with you some beautiful spots worth checking out in the Algarve region, as some of you might already be planning your summer holidays there.
This is the second year I spent the first part of the year in Algarve. Both times, I stayed in the eastern Algarve. However, given the relatively short distances between locations, you can actually stay in the eastern Algarve and reach the most western spots in about an hour. So, the region you select doesn't significantly impact your overall ability to explore the area.
I think the main differences between areas lie in the types of activities you enjoy and want to experience.
If you're into surfing, western Algarve will surely be the place for you, as you can find all types of beaches there, whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer. Central Algarve has beautiful cities like Lagos or Portimão, which you can explore along with their surroundings. The eastern part of the Algarve is more about nature, leisure beaches, and trails with amazing views.
I've created a map that includes all the spots worth checking out in this region.
Since this area has spectacular views and trails, here are what I consider the best trails in the Algarve - no ranking here because I loved them all.
Quinta do Lago or Ludo Trail
Surrounded by fancy golf fields and luxury homes, Quinta do Lago is a very versatile trail that offers many possibilities. If you're into cycling, you can follow this route for beautiful scenery and accessible paths.
If you're looking for a day at the beach, this trail provides easy access to a beautiful shore where you can spend the whole day. Running, walking, bird watching, or even watching crabs- all these activities are possible here, and you'll surely enjoy them.
There are multiple spots from where you can start the trail: from Faro Airport, from Ponte da Quinta do Lago, or if you want to go directly to the beach, you can park near Praia do Ancão.
Galé - Armação de Pêra
This trail is not very touristy; it's more of a spot for the evening walks of locals from Armação de Pêra. The trail starts in Armação de Pêra and passes a beautiful beach along the way.
It's perfect for a sunset walk or a Sunday stroll in nature because you get to enjoy the ocean and embrace the green scenery at the same time. Usually, I start the trail from here, but you can choose a different starting point since the trail is quite long.
Praia da Falésia - Parque de Caravanas Açoteia
One of my latest discoveries and favorite trails this year. The trail passes Praia da Falésia - which won the 2024 best beach award by Tripadvisor - offering spectacular views. Its proximity to the ocean makes the whole trail even more breathtaking. But honestly, 90% of trails in Algarve have ocean views, so what I truly enjoy about this one is the mix of landscapes: from easy trails with ocean views to rocky climbs and fields of blooming succulents, to hidden forests, all in one place. You can follow the trail for more than 6 km and you won't get bored.

There are also some nice small coffee shops where you can enjoy the waterfront, listen to good music, and savor your coffee. So if you plan to follow this trail, there's a lot to explore.
I recommend starting the trail from "The Beautiful Pink House". If you want a comfy place to finish the trail or if you're already hungry before starting, Restaurant Chinese Pine View is a sure hit.
Also, be mindful to use Google Maps when searching for Praia da Falésia because Waze will send you on an unnecessary 30-minute off-road trail.
Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos
The last time I did this trail on foot was in 2023, but this year I came back to see it from a kayak. No matter how you decide to experience this trail, it's worth visiting. If you choose to do it on foot, expect beautiful scenery and many 'algares secos' (caves) that create memorable landscapes. If you want to be able to explore the caves and see all the hidden spots, I recommend the kayak experience.

You can follow the AllTrails route if you plan to do it on foot. If you want the kayak experience, I highly recommend Secret Algarve. They were very organized, and even though my kayaking experience was almost non-existent, I survived and enjoyed the whole trip!
Praia da Amoreira - Praia da Fateixa
This is a one-of-a-kind trail and beach that is worth seeing at least once in a lifetime. As I mentioned earlier, this part of Algarve is perfect for surfing, with strong waves and mild winds. The ocean can seem quite ferocious at times. All these elements create a unique vibe around this place; it's like you're transported to a new world where time stands still and you can just enjoy being. The trail itself is not a properly marked one; it's more of a do-it-yourself kind of experience where you can choose the path that suits you best.

I first discovered this spot by driving to Praia do Amoreira. The road is quite bumpy, but the views are worth it. Once you reach Praia de Amoreira, you can follow the trail which offers beautiful landscapes and a lot of wild vegetation.
Later this year, I found a better way to enjoy both Praia do Amoreira and all the other beaches and small villages around. Usually, I set Praia da Fateixa as the final destination, and along the way, there are more parking spots from which you can choose. From there, you can explore the trail that goes toward Praia do Medo da Fonte Santa or head towards Praia de Amoreira.

If you are in this area, you should definitely check out Pontal da Carrapateira, a beautiful surf spot that offers amazing views of the ocean surrounded by dunes and lush greenery.
I'm pretty sure it's not the first time I'm mentioning them here, but if you're already heading to Praia do Amoreira or Pontal da Carrapateira, it's a pity not to stop by and enjoy the vibes and coffee from Koyo Coffee.
Carvoeiro Boardwalk
One of the most popular trails in the Algarve, usually very touristy but worth visiting nevertheless. The entire trail offers impressive views of the coast and is very easy to navigate. Along the way, you have the opportunity to explore some 'caves, climb around them, and get closer to the ocean.

You can start the trail by parking near Escola EB 1 de Carvoeiro. By starting here, you get the opportunity to explore more than just the trail. Usually, I enjoy doing the trail and then heading to Carvoeiro Beach to enjoy the sun and a very good coffee at Levels.
